It works by delivering a steady stream of forced air into the airway, propping it open so the user can breathe during rest. Unfortunately, however, if you don’t use your CPAP machine as directed, it can’t deliver the results it was designed to provide. Here’s a closer look at what is known as “CPAP compliance”, and why it’s so important to use your device as directed.

What Are CPAP Machines?

CPAP machines are devices that generate forced air that is delivered via a mask to help prop the airway open so you can breathe while reclining. It is one of the most common ways to treat sleep apnea and is often the first choice of sleep doctors and dentists when starting patients on a new regimen for their disorder.

With CPAP, you can adjust the force of the air depending on how severe the airway collapse is. Most machines can even record the usage of the patient to measure its effectiveness. Data can then be transmitted to either the patient’s doctor, sleep dentist, or insurance provider. In some cases, insurance companies will require patients to use their device at least four hours a night in exchange for coverage of the unit and use this data to verify the patient is abiding by their prescription. This is known as CPAP compliance.

A Closer Look at CPAP Compliance

You may have heard the term “CPAP compliance” used by your doctor or sleep dentist. This is a term to describe whether a patient is using their machine as prescribed. In some cases, your insurance company will monitor your CPAP compliance to ensure that you are using the machine for the minimum amount of time your sleep dentist or doctor has recommended. In most cases, this is about four hours each night. CPAP compliance ensures that you are giving your body the best chance of the therapy working and maximizing your opportunity for better quality sleep. After all, if you don’t use your machine, it can’t help you!

How Can I Improve My CPAP Compliance?

If you have a CPAP machine and are struggling to be compliant with it, there are steps you can take to make treatment more effective. These include:

If you are frequently congested or struggling to breathe through your nose with CPAP, speak to your doctor about allergy testing, or try a nasal decongestant.

Use a humidifier to help warm and moisturize the air and make breathing more comfortable.

Add a chin strap to your CPAP machine to help keep your mask in place if you are experiencing air leakage.

Switch to a different style of mask if yours is uncomfortable or causes unwanted symptoms like claustrophobia or dry eye.

Discuss adjusting the air pressure with your sleep dentist to reduce dry mouth or persistent headaches.

Speak to your sleep dentist about combination therapy, which utilizes both a CPAP machine and oral appliance therapy together so you can lower the settings on your machine.

Remember, CPAP is a safe, effective method for treating sleep apnea, but it only works if you use it as prescribed by your sleep dentist or doctor. In fact, compliance is an important tenement of treatment, and one that may even be required by your medical insurance company in exchange for your device’s coverage. So, stop struggling to use your machine as directed. Speak to your doctor today about how to improve your compliance and make the most of your CPAP therapy!

About Our Practice

At SleepMed Solutions, our team of caring and compassionate sleep experts, Dr. Edward Sall and Jack Bagley PA-C, want you to get the comfortable, complete night’s sleep you deserve.
