Many people find it to be an effective and convenient alternative to CPAP treatment. However, it does represent an adjustment to your usual routine. It might take some time before you are completely comfortable with your new appliance. This blog post shares practical tips to help you through the transition period.

Use Your Appliance Every Night

Consistency is essential if you want to get used to your oral appliance as quickly as possible. You should wear your appliance every night, even if it feels a little strange or uncomfortable at first. And do not give up if you find that you sometimes accidentally eject your appliance during sleep.

Skipping nights may prolong the adjustment process and make it harder for your body to adapt to this new routine. If you stick with it, you will likely find that the appliance becomes an easy part of your bedtime experience over time.

Practice Wearing It During the Day

You can ease the transition by wearing your oral appliance for short periods during the day. Try putting it in while you read, watch TV, or perform other quiet activities at home. This strategy will help your mouth and jaw become accustomed to the sensation without the added pressure of trying to fall asleep. The more familiar you become with the appliance, the less likely you are to experience discomfort at night.

If you find that the appliance activates your gag reflex, place it in your mouth and practice taking slow, deep breaths through your nose. Try to gradually extend the amount of time you wear it each day.

See Your Provider for Help if Needed

If you experience persistent discomfort, excessive drooling, or notice that your appliance does not fit correctly, you should schedule an appointment with your provider. Your dentist or sleep specialist can make adjustments to improve the fit and function of your appliance. They may also offer additional tips to help you manage any side effects or concerns.

Most patients need a few weeks to feel comfortable with their oral sleep appliance. Hopefully, it will not be long before your treatment is a natural part of your routine!

Meet the Practice

SleepMed Solutions is home to four sleep experts in Greensboro, including two physician assistants and two dentists (one of whom is also a medical doctor).
